When it comes to Barack Obama, Americans suffer from an epic case of cognitive dissonance -- the ability to hold, simultaneously, two contradictory points of view.
On one hand, we all know the President is a member of the liberal elite. Everything he's ever said or done defines him as such.
At the same time, we tend to see him -- thanks to clever White House marketing -- as a "regular guy." That perception is hard to square with what we know about liberal elites: that they absolutely hate many of the things regular Americans love, such as...
SUVs. Next time you're on the road, count how many of the vehicles in your field of vision are SUVs. Then mentally add all the folks in beat-up sedans who would be driving an SUV if they could afford one. Conclusion: Americans love SUVs.
Liberal elites, though, hate them. They waste too much gas. They pollute the environment and destroy the ozone. They're single-handedly killing polar bears in the Arctic.
The funniest thing on the road is an SUV with an Obama bumper sticker. Doesn't the driver know the president wants to take away his big honking SUV and replace it with an electric car the size of a man purse?
Cheap gas. Come on, who doesn't love cheap gas? Liberal elites, that's who. They don't want gas to be cheap, because that means more people driving, more ozone depletion, more dead polar bears, yada, yada.
Don't take my word for it. Here's Obama's Energy Secretary, Steven Chu: "Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe." That would be about $8 a gallon, give or take a body part.
Fast food. I noticed that McDonald's stopped bragging about how many people they've served when the number reached a billion. Not all of those people are Americans, but most are. Heck, half of them are my extended family.
Yet if the Obamas had their way, we'd all be trading our French fries for carrot sticks. Or at least, if Mrs. Obama had her way. I bet Barack has been known to sneak a cheeseburger, when he's not personally blowing away terrorists.
Babies. Everybody loves babies -- except liberal elites. Oh, I'm sure they love their own babies, and maybe their liberal elite friends' babies. But given their obsession with abortion, birth control and "overpopulation," they don't seem terribly fond of anybody else's babies.
In fact, they think the federal government should decide who gets to have a baby. According to John Holdren, the President's chief adviser for science and technology, it should "be possible to require pregnant single women to ... have abortions."
Clearly, Obama and his elitist friends don't love the same things you love. Remember that before you give them too much love at the polls.
