Skinns in second at Stadion Classic

ATHENS -- Nicholas Skinns didn't have a guaranteed spot in the Stadion Classic at UGA field a week ago. Now, he's two strokes off the lead. The 30-year-old England native and Gwinnett County resident birdied three out of his last five holes to finish with a 6-under-par 65, good for a tie for second place.

Kent Jones hit only six fairways but one-putted 14 times en route to a course-record 8-under 63 and the first-round lead.

"It was a steady round," he said. "I took my chances when they came and made some nice up-and-downs for birdies on the par fives to keep the momentum going."

Skinns made it into last week's Nationwide Tour tournament in Valdosta through a Monday qualifier and then finished in the top 25 to earn a spot on the Athens tournament's field.

"I've been playing pretty well all year, so this is a case of trying to keep playing like I've been playing," he said. "I'm just trying to keep it going."

Four other Gwinnett County residents are also playing in the Stadion Classic. Scott Dunlap is tied for 32nd after firing a 2-under-par 69. Brent Witcher finished in a tie for 72nd with an even-par round of 71, while Reid Edstrom is in a tie for 114th after shooting a 2-over 73. Sung Back is 155th after finishing with a 77.
