Pioneer school planned

DULUTH -- The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center is inviting residents to "step back in time" to a one room school house at the Pioneer School at McDaniel Farm on Saturday.

"Pioneer school is a hands-on living history experience that allows children to participate in a traditional day of school from the early days of Gwinnett," said Catherine Long, manager of the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center history and culture program.

The program will take guests back in time to circa 1875 as they recite their lessons to the teacher and participate in games.

In the late 1800s, the school year revolved around the agricultural season, and students maintained their chores while in school. Penmanship, spelling bees and McGuffey Readers were just a few of the tools used by teachers in the early days of education.

The Pioneer School Program is $15 per child for Gwinnett County residents and $18 per child for out of county guests.

Participants must pre-register by calling (770) 904-3500. McDaniel Farm is located at 3251 McDaniel Road, Duluth.
