Irene Stanford Sikes was born in Pine Apple, Alabama, The only daughter of Wiley W. Stanford and Lillian McCrory Stanford. She graduated form Moore Academy and attended Judson College and graduated from Montevallo University where she was president of the student body during her senior year. She began her teaching career in Cullman, AL where she met her husband, Charles Sikes whom she was married to for 60 years. She later taught school in Jacksonville, FL, Lawrenceville, GA and retired form teaching in Marietta, GA. She was a dedicated Teacher, Loving Wife, Devoted Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. Charles and Irene traveled extensively and spent a great deal of time at their mountain home in Sky Valley, GA. They were members of Parkway Baptist Church in Duluth, GA. Irene had taught Sunday school at the Lawrenceville First Baptist Church and she was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club in Lawrenceville. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Charles Sikes on August 22, 2011. She is survived by her daughters, Karen Sikes of Atlanta, Sandra Phillips of Duluth, and Laurie Sikes of Atlanta. She was blessed with grandchildren, Stephen and Shellie Phillips of Smyrna, Stanford and Lindsey Phillips of Avondale Estates, Samantha Phillips of Atlanta, and Savannah Phillips of Duluth, and great grandchildren Stephen Michael and Stetson Phillips of Smyrna and Neve and Ford Phillips of Avondale Estates, and her brother Wiley Stanford of Flowery Branch. In addition to Irene’s immediate family, she is survived by her nieces, Susan Stanford Jemison of Montgomery and Charlotte Stanford Jackson of Auburn, her cousins, Bobby Sikes Jr. of Atlanta, Susan Sikes Davis of Grayson, and Sylvia Hawkins of Lawrenceville. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Irene will be at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel. Rev. Jim King will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 – 9:00 PM and Thursday from 1:00 until the service at the funeral home.
