SUWANEE -- Parents and guardians of children who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2012, are invited to visit their neighborhood school to enroll their future kindergartner.
On Thursday, new Gwinnett County Public Schools students and parents are welcome to register during the annual kindergarten registration day.
Registration for the new school year takes place before the summer in order to provide time to organize classes and allow students to participate in local school activities that will them prepare for the first day: Aug. 6.
Parents and guardians can call their local elementary school for registration times or visit the 2012 Countdown for Kindergarten section on the Gwinnett County Public Schools website at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us for more information and school phone numbers.
Parents and guardians should bring the following to registration:
-- The student.
-- An official document showing proof of birth date such as an original birth certificate or birth registration.
-- Proof of residency in the attendance zone such as a current utility bill.
-- A Georgia certificate of immunization.
-- Evidence of vision, hearing and dental exams obtained within the past year.
-- Photo ID. The person enrolling the student should present proper identification such as a driver's license, a state identification card or a passport.
-- Proof of custody/guardianship.
-- The child's social security number.
-- A copy of the pre-K progress report if the child attended a state pre-K program.
If parents are unsure of which school their kindergartner should attend, they should call the GCPS planning department at (678) 301-7085.
