Bill: Ga. welfare applicants must take drug tests

ATLANTA (AP) -- Some people applying for welfare in Georgia would have to take drug tests before they could get their benefits under legislation heading to Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.

House lawmakers voted 110-56 on Thursday to approve the bill on the final day of the legislative session.

Under the bill, anyone who tests positive for drug use could not apply for welfare for one month and until they test clean. A third violation could prevent someone from applying for benefits for a year. The applicant would have to pass another drug test before reapplying.

Courts have struck down similar laws in other states, although proponents in Georgia say the newly passed legislation can withstand a legal challenge.

The results from the tests could not be used to criminally prosecute people.

A step in the right direction, Now who is going to pay for the drug tests? The government or the recipient? I hope they draw blood, I've heard how people are using a urine wash now to show no drugs. This urine wash has been on the market for years.

Great law. Now watch the judges appointed by liberal Democrats strike down the law because it violates someones "civil rights".

So you support violating someone's civil rights?

Buzz I see a lot of your posts. Right again. The judges are the main problem in Georgia. Gwinnett has done a good job electing them but the state benches are full of PROBLEM judges.

If I have to pass a drug test to have a job, why shouldn't one have to pass them to receive assistance,,what applies to one should apply to all.

Absolutely. The next step is to legalize marijuana, decrease the prison population, and generate some tax revenue off the stuff. Sadly, this law will probably be decried as "racist" by someone, much the same way the voter ID law was called racist. I'm sure Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton will have something to say...because this would be guaranteed facetime on TV.

But if marijuana is legalized I won't pass my drug test to get my free money to buy my pot!

JUST what we need to do. Send a message to our young people that doing drugs is A-OK and goobermint approved !!!

You do realize that alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine are all technically drugs, right? The only reason they are legal and marijuana is not is because they have strong lobbies in DC that pad the pockets of our elected officials. The War on Drugs is a failure. It has wasted money left and right. Studies show that legalization and treatment of drugs like marijuana is not only cheaper on the taxpayer, but safer for the users as well.

FYI...the "urine wash" doesn't work, I can show you countless people who thought it did, and they are in jail

The problem with this bill is what happens to the children of the welfare recipients, who are forced to suffer due to the parents negligence?

You mean unfit parents who should not have birthed the kids anyway? That's another blog.

Simple. Take the children into DFCS custody. Tell the parents that they must be drug free in order to have supervised visitation rights and remain drug free to regain custody. Once the parents regain custody then they must submit to random drug test as a condition of having the children in their custody. Many grandparents are raising their grandkids today because of their childrens drug use.

One other thing. The state pays for the first test. If found to be using drugs then all remaining test should be paid for by the one receiving the benefits.

It's not the state's responsibility to fund illegal and immoral behavior. These kids need to think twice about staying with parents who are drug users.
