Gladiators clinch division title

ESTERO, Fla. -- The Gwinnett Gladiators got a 30-save performance from goaltender Marc Cheverie in a 2-0 shutout of the Florida Everblades on Wednesday night at the Germain Arena.

Gwinnett clinched the South Division title with the victory. The Gladiators can finish no lower than second in the Eastern Conference heading into the Kelly Cup playoffs.

Cody Brookwell broke a scoreless tie 4:26 into the second period. Brookwell notched his fourth goal of the season, finding a loose puck in the slot and flipping it past Everblades netminder John Muse. Jake Drewiske and Tyler Murovich picked up the assists in the goal.

Doug Jones put the game away for the Gladiators midway through the third period. He slipped over the Everblades blue line and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Muse for his second goal of the season.

Florida outshot Gwinnett 30-19, but couldn't beat Cheverie.

The two teams face off again Friday and Saturday in the two final games of the regular season.

The Gladiators already secured home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs and have set their dates for games at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Game 3 of the best-of-five series is April 6. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, are April 8 and 9.

Wow, what do you know? A hockey team that not only succeeds, but quite frankly excels...and it's located in Georgia. I pray the Atlanta Spirit Group stays far, far away from the Gladiators.
