SUGAR HILL -- Two students at Sycamore Elementary School were disciplined last week after they were caught using a prescribed medication on school grounds, according to district spokesman Jorge Quintana.

"Not only is it against the law, but it is against school rules," said Quintana, adding that the students were caught with "expired prescription nasal spray, which was not prescribed to either one of them."

Quintana said parents met Monday with school administration to "review the consequences that were handed to the students." He did not comment further on what those consequences were.

He said the correct procedure for a parent to give students prescription medication is to "bring the medicine to the school clinic with a note from the doctor. The clinic dispenses the medicine to the student because of student safety."

Added Quintana: "It's for the safety of all students in the classroom."
