BUFORD -- A few years ago, Katie Grant was thrown into a situation that all parents dread: explaining to her children what happens when someone dies. To help juveniles learn and cope with death, she wrote a book called "Haven's Heaven" which she'll be signing on Saturday at LifeWay Christian Store at the Mall of Georgia at 1 p.m.
It was a little more frightening and complicate for Grant to talk about the issue to her children because the two people who passed away were also kids.
"The book began as an idea because we in 2004 when our friend's son died from a brain tumor," the Braselton resident said. "We told our girls about him and one asked, 'Will he celebrate his birthday in Heaven?' The next year, another friend's daughter died of meningitis. My oldest kid asked, 'If I let a balloon go, will it go all the way to Heaven?' I started writing these questions down."
And that's how the book grew in content.
As the book grew in popularity over the past two years, she created a coloring book to accompany the children's book.
"I made the coloring book so it could be used as a tool ... a bedtime story to plant the seed of faith or something for someone who had lost a loved one or a pet," she said. "It can be fun for kids because the questions are opened ended. An adult could guide a child through so it's not in a scary way and let the kid draw their own picture."
Grant made the book specifically for children, but has learned that it also helps adults find closure when they lose a little one.
"For a child, I want them to picture Heaven not as a scary thing," Grant said. "The pictures are very bright. I want a child to get a sense that it's OK to ask questions about Heaven -- and to get into a habit to say their prayers at night. And for those who's child has passed, to give them comfort or give them a smile because it's a huge honor to do that."
