Redmond, three others optioned to G-Braves

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Gwinnett pitching staff is starting to take shape as players are sent down from Atlanta’s major league spring camp.

Todd Redmond, Jaye Chapman, J.J. Hoover and Luis Avilan were optioned to the G-Braves on Sunday.

Redmond, 26, was a key part of the Gwinnett rotation each of the team’s first three seasons. The right-hander led the G-Braves in victories the first two years and trailed just International League pitcher of the year Julio Teheran last season.

Redmond was 10-9 with a 2.92 ERA, setting Class AAA highs for both victories and ERA. His career record with Gwinnett is 28-24 and he pitched a no-hitter at Indianapolis for the G-Braves in 2010.

Right-handers Chapman and Hoover should be key part of the Gwinnett bullpen in 2012. Chapman, 24, appeared in 43 games for the G-Braves after moving up from Mississippi and was 2-3 with two saves and a 2.98 ERA. Hoover, 24, began 2011 at Class AA like Chapman and didn’t allow a run in his 10 relief appearances for Gwinnett, where he had a win and a save.

Left-hander Avilan, 22, was 4-8 with a 4.57 ERA last season for Mississippi, making 13 starts in his 38 games. He fared better working out of the rotation, going 3-4 with a 3.82 ERA.
