Police: 1 dead, 1 critical in Lawrenceville home

LAWRENCEVILLE — Gwinnett County police say a woman has been killed and a man has been hospitalized in critical condition in what they say was a slaying and suicide attempt in a home near Lawrenceville.

Spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said that officers responded to 2674 Summerfield Way at about 4:30 p.m. Monday for a welfare check. The couple living there had missed an appointment, he said.

"Officers discovered that both cars were in the garage and made entry into the home," Ritter said.

Inside, police found the body of a white female resident in her mid-60s. They also found her husband, who is in his early 70s, "in immediate distress" inside the home, Ritter said.

The male was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition.

Early indications led police to believe the man had killed his wife before attempting to end his own life, Ritter said. Neither will be identified until police notify their next of kin.

No information regarding specific cause of death or a possible murder weapon was available.
