PREP ROUNDUP: Duluth nips Norcross 4-3 in 10 innings

DULUTH — Duluth earned a Region 7-AAAAA baseball win Friday night by edging Norcross 4-3, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 10th off a throwing error that plated Chris Rich.

Zack Erwin picked up the win in relief, going four innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs. Edward Willemse started and took a no decision, giving six strong innings with one earned run and four strikeouts.

Willemse also had two hits with a double and two-run homer. Rich finished with two hits and a run. Evan Dumas added two hits and an RBI, while Tommy Matton had two hits for Duluth (5-4, 1-2).

Norcross starter Chris Raasch (1-1) pitched the entire game in taking the tough loss, going 9 1/3 innings with three walks and 13 strikeouts.

Offensive standouts for the Blue Devils (3-4, 0-1) were Zach Shirah (1-for-5, run), Jess Ramsey (1-for-4, RBI), Jascanel Ferreras (2-for-5, run), Andrew Lightle (hit, run), Kevin Cosola (RBI double) and Andrew Gray (1-for-3, run).


North 3, Collins Hill 0

SUWANEE — North Gwinnett head coach Frank Vashaw recorded his 400th career win Friday night as his Bulldogs shut out Collins Hill 3-0 in a Region 7-AAAAA game.

Jordan Brown (1-1) pitched six innings to pick up his first win, striking out three, while Danny Parry struck out the side in the seventh for the save.

Justin Dutka went 2-for-3 with an RBI for North (7-3, 2-1), while Cole Willoughby was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Michael Haynes also had a hit and a run for North.

Parkview 11, Shiloh 1

LILBURN — Parkview’s Ryan Blanton and Jeff Ronprin each delivered a two-run double in leading the Panthers to an 11-1 win over Shiloh in five innings on Friday night.

Rob Youngblood also went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Hunter Thornton and Jack Esmonde each had an RBI. Josh Hart also finished 2-for-3.

The winning pitcher was Matt Olson (3-0), who went five innings and gave up just one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The win pushed Parkview to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Shiloh (6-4, 0-1) picked up its run off an RBI hit by Jeremy Glore, while Cletis Avery added a double. B.J. Armstead also had a hit, while Josh Nance surrendered nine runs in three innings in taking the loss.

Columbus 3, Brookwood 0

COLUMBUS — Brookwood’s offense could never find its stroke on Friday as the Broncos managed just three hits in a 3-0 loss to Columbus.

Coming through with one hit each for the Broncos were Blake Schuck, Lucas Sims and Clint Carr. Allen Tokarz took the loss on the mound, giving up two runs (one earned) in four innings on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

GAC 3, Decatur 0

NORCROSS — Greater Atlanta Christian starter Patrick Stone carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Decatur on Friday night as the Spartans shut out the Bulldogs 3-0.

Stone finished with a complete game, allowing two hits with four strikeouts.

Offensively, GAC was led by Daino Deas, who went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jordan Dudek also went 1-for-2 with two runs, while Greg Burland finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. GAC improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 6-AA.

Providence 6, Fellowship 2

ROSWELL — Austin Loyd went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs on Friday in helping Providence to a 6-2 win over Fellowship Christian.

Max Broom added two doubles and a run for the Stars (6-4, 2-0), while Justin Brew went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.

Steven Slaughter started and earned the win, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up one run on four hits, a walk and nine strikeouts. Josh Carter followed with the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit.

Hebron 10, Prince Ave. 2

DACULA — Jordan Hillyer of Hebron ran his record to 3-0 on Friday as the Lions beat Prince Avenue 10-2 in a Region 8-A game.

Hillyer went the distance, allowing two earned runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts. He also went 1-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs.

P.J. Westbury also had two hits and an RBI, while Tyler Hutch finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Hebron improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the region.

Campbell 4, Meadowcreek 1

NORCROSS — Campbell defeated Meadowcreek 4-1 on Thursday night, dropping the Mustangs to 4-8 on the year.

Shea Wilkey was charged with the loss, allowing four runs while striking out five. Offensively, Meadowcreek was led by Cameron Bourennais, who was 1-for-3 with and RBI, and Chris Custodio, who finished 2-for-2.


Archer 2, Central 1

LAWRENCEVILLE — Archer evened its Region 8-AAAAA record at 1-1 on Friday by nipping Central Gwinnett 2-1.

Goals for the Tigers (6-3 overall) came from Megan Wilson and Caroline Mangum.

Parkview 4, South 1

LILBURN — Elizabeth Quintanilla of Parkview scored twice on Friday night as the Panthers downed South Gwinnett 4-1 on Friday night.

Maddie Ober and Erin Baker each added a goal as Parkview improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Peachtree Ridge 2, Norcross 1

NORCROSS — Peachtree Ridge opened its Region 7-AAAAA schedule with a 2-1 win over Norcross.

Shelby Jennings put in the first goal for the Lions (5-4, 1-0) off an assist from Alanna Dineen. Jennings would later return the favor when she fed Dineen for the second goal. Cosette Morche also played well at keeper with four saves.

Norcross (2-6-1) received its goal from Arielle Silvers.

Mountain View 3, Meadowcreek 1

NORCROSS — Mountain View topped Meadowcreek 3-1 on Friday night in a Region 7-AAAAA match.

Scoring the lone goal for the Mustangs (1-5-2) was Kim Deanda.

Dacula 4, Colquitt Co. 0

DACULA — Makayla Clack scored two goals and Ruva Chimedza recorded two assists on Friday night as the Falcons blanked Colquitt Co. 4-0 in a non-region match.

Sheaenne Powell and Lauren Vick each added a goal, while Vick and Katie McAdams each added an assist. Dacula improved to 7-1-1.

GAC 9, Carrollton 0

NORCROSS — Greater Atlanta Christian celebrated Senior Night on Friday with a 9-0 rout over Carrollton, the second-ranked team in Class AAA.

Five players scored for GAC, led by four goals and an assist from Rachel Garcia. Taylor Wagnon provided two goals and an assist, while Kayla Puzas, Jamie Campbell and Ellie Huizenga each added one goal.

Mollie Arrendale led the Spartans in assists with two, while Hannah Huizenga added one. Elizabeth White recorded three saves at keeper in earning the shutout.

GAC seniors are Huizenga, Kailey Bryan, Kelsey Fervier, Ashley Williams and Rachel Pew.

Buford 10, Maynard Jackson 0

BUFORD — Melissa Sullivan of Buford scored three goals and Lindsey White added two more as the Wolves rolled to a 10-0 win over Maynard Jackson on Friday night.

Adding one goal each for Buford (7-3, 2-0) was Kennedy Webster, Caitlin Dawkins, Alexa Smith, Liz Watkins and Anna Mills.

Providence 7, Pinecrest 3

LILBURN — Providence’s Kat Slayton scored four goals on Friday night to carry the Stars to a 7-3 win over Pinecrest Academy in Region 4-A action.

Brooke Kelly, Anna Bougas and Robyn Lowndes also got in on the action with a goal and an assist each, while Andrea Latimer and Allie Petmecky each helped with an assist. The win improved Providence to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.


Parkview 2, South 0

LILBURN — Parkview keeper Diego Casillas made five saves on Friday night as the Panthers shut out South Gwinnett 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Jonathan Jarrett scored the first goal for Parkview (5-2-3, 2-0) off an assist from Raymond Muro, while Abel Nguyen provided the second goal unassisted.

Central 5, Archer 2

LAWRENCEVILLE — Juan Gonzales and Tyler Budd of Central Gwinnett scored two goals each on Friday night as the Black Knights topped Archer 5-2 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Bryan Castillo helped in the win with a goal and an assist, while Juan Tovar recorded an assist. Central improved to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Brookwood 1, Grayson 0

LOGANVILLE — Brookwood nipped Grayson 1-0 on Friday night in a Region 8-AAAAA match.

Andres Benitez scored for Brookwood (7-2, 2-0) off an assist from Bryson Dorsey, while Brandon Schuster recorded the shutout at keeper with five saves.

Peachtree Ridge 1, Norcross 0

NORCROSS — Peachtree Ridge edged Norcross 1-0 on Friday night in a Region 7-AAAAA match.

The Lions broke through with 16 minutes left to play when Raul Diaz scored off a pass from Kevin Zuluaga. Daryl Sack helped keep the Blue Devils from scoring by saving 10 shots at keeper.

Norcross fell to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the region.

Dacula 3, Colquitt Co. 0

DACULA — Lonnie Cottrell scored two goals Friday night to lead Dacula 3-0 over Colquitt County in a non-region match.

Joe Efford added the third goal for Dacula (5-5), while Nick Sibert provided an assist. James Fukartas and Jori Wahner split time in goal for the shutout.

Duluth 1, Etowah 1

JEKYLL ISLAND — Duluth and Etowah deadlocked in a 1-1 tie on Friday night in the Jekyll Island Tournament on Champions.

Etowah took a 1-0 lead early in the second on a penalty kick goal, but Duluth (4-2-2) battled back a few minutes later and tied the match 1-1 when Ivaylo Yordanov scored on a free kick.

Buford 10, Maynard Jackson 0

BUFORD — Esgardo Arroyo of Buford scored five goals on Friday night in leading the Wolves to a 10-0 romp over Maynard Jackson in Region 6-AA.

Christian Lopez and Braulio Jaramilla each added two goals for the Wolves (7-2, 2-0), while Carlos Gutierrez scored one. Buford also received a strong defensive effort as Maynard Jackson did not record one shot on goal.

Carrollton 2, GAC 0

NORCROSS — Carrollton upended Greater Atlanta Christian 2-0 on Friday night in a non-region battle. GAC fell to 8-3-1.

Providence 4, Pinecrest 1

LILBURN — Providence notched a 4-1 win over Pincecrest Academy on Friday night.

Ted Perry provided the first goal for the Stars (5-3, 2-1) with a header off a free kick from Taylor Henry. Henry would later scored the Stars’ second goal on a free kick.

Josh Platillero added the thrid goal off a pass from Caleb McQuaig, while Will Lowndes rounded out the scoring off a pass from Perry.


Collins Hill 11, Norcross 3

SUWANEE — Collins Hill received goals from seven different players on Friday night as the Eagles posted an 11-3 win over Norcross.

Leading the attack for the Eagles was Holin Axley with three goals, while Abe Heller and Kyle Burke each followed with two goals. Tyler Agee, Connor Pittman, Ryan Floress and Drew Gyselinck each helped with one goal each.

Collins Hill evened its record at 4-4.


St. Pius 9, North 6

ATLANTA — North Gwinnett dropped to 3-4 on the season with a 9-6 loss at St. Pius on Friday night.

Lauren Aycock had three goals for North, while Erica Smith scored two. Sylvia Chow added one goal, while Tiffany Romero recorded five ground balls. Keeper Victoria Del Noer saved 10 shots.
