PREP ROUNDUP: Blair, Bears open 7-AAAAA baseball slate with win over Duluth

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Beau Blair had a no-hitter through five innings and finished with a one-run, three-hit outing as Mountain View knocked off Duluth 6-1 in the Region 7-AAAAA baseball opener.

Blair, who also hit a two-run homer, struck out five en route to the complete-game victory as the Bears remained undefeated at 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the region. Tyler Bethune added two hits and Alex Dedels had a two-run single for Mountain View.

BASEBALL

Peachtree Ridge 5, North 3

SUWANEE -- Peachtree Ridge opened Region 7-AAAAA baseball play with a thrilling 5-3 win over North Gwinnett behind the strong pitching of Donald Frew and Coltan Ramsey.

Frew went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four. Ramsey came on for the two-inning save, blanking North in the sixth and seventh innings and getting a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. Robert Sanchez led the Peachtree Ridge 11-hit offensive attack with a 3-for-4 night that included a double and two RBIs. Billy Best and Brian Hanberry each went 2-for-4 and an RBI for the Lions (5-3, 1-0) while Tyler Chaney added a fielder's choice RBI. North falls to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in region action.

Collins Hill 4, Mill Creek 2

SUWANEE -- Wayne Wages got the complete-game victory as Collins Hill defeated Mill Creek 4-2 in the Region 7-AAAAA baseball opener. Wages (2-1) went seven innings, allowing two runs, scattering seven hits and fanned 10 Mill Creek batters in the win. Adam Horridge went 2-for-3 with a double to lead Collins Hill (3-2-1, 1-0) offensively.

Lanier 2, Johnson (Gainesville) 1

SUGAR HILL -- Austin Gaskins drove home Marcus Milhouse with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as Lanier edged Johnson-Gainesville 2-1 in Region 8-AAA baseball.

Shohn Tanner picked up the win in relief for Lanier with two shutout innings and four strikeouts. Matthew Ramsay started the game for Lanier and threw seven innings of one-hit baseball while allowing one run and striking out five. Stephen Rusch went 2-for-4 for Lanier, including a double and a single, while Michael Diaz, T.J. Richardson and Kameron Doster each had a hit for the Longhorns (3-3, 2-1). Austin Wood added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to plate Diaz with Lanier's other run. Lanier, which won a total of four games in its first season in 2011, moved to the .500 mark overall for the first time.

Flowery Branch 11, Dacula 6

DACULA -- Travis Vanderhorst hit a two-run homer and walked three times, but it wasn't enough as Dacula fell to Flowery Branch 11-6. Matt Cole went 2-for-3 for Dacula (1-8) while Austin Collins was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Shannon Haney (0-2) took the loss on the mound for Dacula.

Loganville 4, South 0

SNELLVILLE -- Loganville blanked South Gwinnett 4-0 as the Comets dropped to 4-5 overall. Adrian Martinez (0-1) took the loss for South, going 2.1 innings and allowing just one earned run and striking out five. Tyler Stokes came on to pitch two innings of relief and allowed no runs on one hit and striking out two.

Shiloh 10, Lakeside (DeKalb) 8

ATLANTA -- Brandon Hill got the win on the mound and Kyle Lewis and Cletis Avery had two hits each as Shiloh got by Lakeside (DeKalb) 10-8. The Generals improve to 6-2 overall.

Holy Innocents' 8, Wesleyan 6

ATLANTA -- Wesleyan dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Holy Innocents' in Region 5-A action. Griffin Bone led the way for Wesleyan (3-5, 1-1) with a 2-for-4 day at the plate that included a two-run homer and a run-scoring double. Brandon Moss added a two-run homer and Grant Colton went 2-for-3 for the Wolves.

Barnes Academy 11, Killian Hill Christian 1

HARTWELL -- Mark Shaver and Sebastian Thomas got the only hits for Killian Hill Christian as the Cougars dropped an 11-1 decision to Barnes Academy in five innings. Alex Atteberry (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Killian Hill (2-3).

Grayson wins trio in Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Grayson's baseball team went 3-0 during its weekend trip to Florida and improved its season record to 6-1.

The Rams beat Pinellas Park (Fla.) 12-1 in their Friday opener as Austin Meadows (who had a homer), Chris Erwin and Drew Taylor each had two hits. Taylor Allum also had a homer and drove in three runs while Jack Banda was the winning pitcher.

Grayson beat Northeast (Fla.) 7-2 in the Friday nightcap with Griffin Ebel picking up the win. Oscar Valdez powered the offense with two hits and four RBIs.

In the trip's finale, the Rams defeated Seminole (Fla.) 5-1 behind a complete-game from Erwin, who had six strikeouts.

BOYS TENNIS

Wesleyan 5, Dunwoody 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan swept the singles and doubles as the Wolves blanked Dunwoody 5-0. Wins in singles came from Jeffrey Chang at No. 1, Austin Zakas at No. 2 and Kris Ippolito at No. 3. Andrew Durman and Zach Taylor at No. 1 and Brooks Prettyman and Palmer Brasher at No. 2 got the wins in doubles for Wesleyan (5-3).

GIRLS TENNIS

Wesleyan 5, Dunwoody 0

DUNWOODY -- Wesleyan took all three singles and both doubles matches in a 5-0 win over Dunwoody. Megan Kelly at No. 1, Savannah Strickland at No. 2 and Sarah Settlage at No. 3 took wins in singles while Julie Rodriguez and Kaitlin English won at No. 1 doubles and Katie McLaughlin and Katie Van Laeke won at No. 2 doubles for the Wolves.

BOYS LACROSSE

Grayson 15, Mill Creek 14

LOGANVILLE -- Zach Dirkse scored the game-winning goal with 2:47 remaining in the second overtime as Grayson defeated Mill Creek 15-14. Dirkse finished the game with five goals and an assist for the Rams, who improved to 3-1 overall. Ben Mertz and Garrett Gorski each had two goals and two assists for Grayson while Hunter Dutton had two goals and an assist. Mill Creek falls to 3-3 overall.
