ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- CSX railroad says one of its trains has derailed in Abbeville, and one of the overturned cars is carrying methanol.
The derailment occurred around 4:30 a.m. Thursday and CSX spokesman Gary Sease said there is no indication of any leak from the car and no injuries have been reported.
Officials in Abbeville evacuated a half-mile area around the site as a precaution. Derrec Becker with the state emergency management division says about 10 homes were evacuated.
Sease says 28 cars on the 93-car train derailed. The train was headed from Atlanta to Hamlet, N.C.
Methanol is used as a solvent, pesticide, and alternative fuel. Its effects can range from eye irritation to nausea to organ damage.
State and local hazardous materials crews were at the scene, evaluating the danger.
