County gets state help in funding Sugarloaf Parkway work

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett's biggest road project got a boost from the state government, with another grant to help out funding the Sugarloaf Parkway extension, nearing completion near Dacula.

The Board of Commissioners approved this week $2.5 million in state funds for the extension's final segment. That brings a total of $7.5 million in state assistance -- nearly 10 percent of the $78 million cost to continue the parkway from its previous end at Ga. Highway 20 to Ga. Highway 316.

"The board's gratitude goes to the state DOT for contributing funds to this regionally significant project," said Chairwoman Charlotte Nash. "This is just another example of how our SPLOST funds have been able to leverage state and federal funding to help improve mobility."

Officials plan to move open this summer a portion of the final $15 million segment, which connects the parkway from Campbell Road to Ga. 316.

The four-lane limited access road has been under construction since 2007 in several segments. Work is currently under way to build a bridge over Ga. 316 for the final interchange.

Alan Chapman, Gwinnett deputy director of transportation, said the connections on the south side of Ga. 316 are set to open in August, although the work to connect the parkway on the north side of the highway will likely take until the end of the year.

With the exception of the state funds, which were given for three sections of the extension, the project was funded by the county's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Officials hope to continue the parkway through Dacula to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Sugar Hill. Funding for that work is proposed in a regional transportation sales tax, which voters will consider this summer.
