The Gwinnett County Police Homicide Unit investigate the homicide of an adult female at 375 Power Ave. in Buford on Wednesday.
BUFORD — Gwinnett homicide detectives have detained a person of interest in connection with a woman found dead inside a Buford apartment Wednesday.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said officers were called to the apartment at 375 Power Ave. at about 4 p.m. Wednesday for a welfare check. They found an “older adult female” deceased inside, with “obvious signs of violence throughout the house and blunt force trauma about the body,” Ritter said.
Investigators had not released the identity of the victim — or confirmed if she lived in the apartment — late Wednesday.
Ritter said detectives had detained and were interviewing a male “person of interest” at the scene, as well as potential witnesses and neighbors. The person of interest was not identified, but police believe he knew the victim. His identity would not be released unless charges were made, Ritter said.
The homicide was not believed to be a random act, at least in the early stages of the investigation.
“My understanding is there was a connection,” Ritter said. “I don’t know to what extent.”
Information about a potential motive was not released. Ritter wasn’t familiar with what led to the welfare check that resulted in the woman’s body being found.
Wednesday’s events mark the third straight week in Gwinnett with at least one homicide. A week earlier, three men were found dead in a Lawrenceville apartment following a presumed drug deal gone bad.
Prior to that, five died in a murder-suicide at a Norcross spa.
