ATLANTA (AP) -- Metro Atlanta's public transit system plans to install security cameras on its buses and trains.
The board of directors of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, or MARTA, on Monday approved the awarding of a contract for the installation of the cameras.
The transit authority says the camera system is designed to enhance safety and security for customers and employees. They are meant to deter criminal activity and to serve as an investigative tool for the system's police force.
MARTA plans to conduct a comprehensive public outreach campaign to educate customers about the camera program.
Camera installation will begin on MARTA's buses. All vehicles are expected to be outfitted by 2014. The $17 million camera installation project is being funded through MARTA's capital budget.
