WINDER -- Lightning caused fires at two separate Barrow County homes over the weekend, causing significant damage and displacing residents at one.
Barrow County firefighters responded to a home on the 1200 block of Cabots Court at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, finding flames shooting from the exterior of the structure, spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin said.
"Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire to prevent further damage," Dakin said. "Firefighters removed part of the exterior wall to make sure the fire was completely extinguished."
Firefighters also removed part of a chimney to extinguish a second hot spot. Two adults were displaced from the resident, officials said.
About four hours earlier, lightning sturck another home on the 1200 block of Old Hog Mountain Road. That home suffered only minor damage, Dakin said.
