LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Lawrenceville City Council is contemplating the extension of its No Smoking ordinance in city facilities.

The first reading of an amendment to the ordinance was heard Monday night.

The present ordinance includes the banning of smoking in city buildings and vehicles, but the new law also will include city shops, warehouses and parking lots adjacent to city-owned property.

The second reading of the amendment is scheduled for the April meeting.

The council also voted to enter into an agreement with the Gwinnett County Convention and Visitors Bureau to give them 2 cents of every eight collected from the city's hotel/motel tax to use in promotion of the city.

In other business, the council:

-- Agreed to rezone a rear part of the property at 395 W. Pike St. from LM to BG to allow the Atlanta Church of God to obtain a building permit in order to demolish its present building and construct a new one on the one-half acre tract.

-- Approved a motion to bid out the Maplewood/Hickory Lane improvement project, which will include curbs and gutters, along with a light overlay of asphalt.

-- Approved an additional services request from Kimley-Horn for changes in the routing of intersections using an 80-20 SPLOST fund match. The additional $7,000 is part of the overall $577,500 contract.

-- OK'd $4,961 to Sailors Engineering Association for design work on the Jackson Street Park, scheduled for construction this summer.

-- Agreed to let the police department use $186,650 in asset forfeiture funds to purchase emergency equipment, such as body armor and two-way radios. Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson also announced that there will be a test of the weather siren at the Georgia Gwinnett College at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The siren can be heard in Lawrenceville.

-- It also was announced that the city will hold a St. Patrick's Day concert and fun run on March 17 and a Recycling Day on May 5.
