ATLANTA (AP) — Republicans in Georgia's General Assembly will soon unveil their budget proposal for the coming fiscal year.
The House Appropriations Committee plans to vote on a version of the budget Monday. That spending proposal would then need the approval of the full House and Senate before heading to Gov. Nathan Deal's desk.
Earlier this year, Deal proposed a $19.2 billion in spending for the fiscal year starting in July. His spending package sought to increase the school calendar for children in a state-funded pre-kindergarten program. The Republican governor has also proposed spending an extra $300 million on the education system to account for growth and scheduled pay raises for teachers.
That bump in spending would not make up for roughly $1 billion in education funding cuts made during the recession.
