House race to be decided by runoff Tuesday

LOGANVILLE -- When four Loganville men squared off for a special election a month ago, they garnered only about 2,000 votes among the four of them.

The runoff, though, could bring a tidal wave, since it is being held in conjunction with Tuesday's presidential preference primary.

On the ballot, minister Paul Smith will take on Tom Kirby for House District 107, a district that currently is divided between Gwinnett and Walton counties.

In the special election, Smith carried more than half the vote in Gwinnett, but with the addition of Walton voters, he received 41.9 percent. Kirby, a businessman, came in second place.

The two have worked to get out the vote again for Tuesday's runoff, which decides who will replace Len Walker, a longtime legislator who headed the House Higher Education Committee. Walker resigned to take on a position as a minister in Big Canoe.
