AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- New documents show that two nuclear reactors in eastern Georgia that would be the nation's first built-from-scratch nuclear plant in a generation might be delayed longer than expected.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that Georgia Power Co.'s latest construction report indicates the project might begin producing electricity eight months later than anticipated. The report was filed recently with the Georgia Public Service Commission.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4-1 last month to issue a permit to Atlanta-based Southern Co. to build and operate the two new reactors at its Plant Vogtle site south of Augusta.
The NRC last approved construction of a nuclear plant in 1978.
