OMAHA, Neb. — Eric Shanteau advanced to the finals of his first event at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials on Monday night.
The Parkview product had the fourth-best time in the two 100-meter breaststroke semifinal heats with a time of 1 minute, 0.27 seconds, good enough to earn one of eight spots in Tuesday night's finals. Two-time Olympian Brendan Hansen had the top qualifying time at 59.71 seconds.
Shanteau made the 2008 Olympic team after delaying treatment for cancer, but only in his best event, the 200 breast (58.96). He is the current world-record holder in both the 100 breast and the 200 breast, which will be contested Thursday and Friday at Trials.
NBC will televise the 100 breast finals Tuesday night as part of its Trials coverage.
