RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (AP) -- Military officials say a soldier who lived in Georgia has died in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense said in a statement that U.S. Army Maj. Paul C. Voelke died June 22 in Mazar E. Sharif, Afghanistan. Military officials say the circumstances of Voelke's death were under investigation, and few other details were released.
The Savannah Morning News reports that Voelke was a resident of Richmond Hill, just outside Savannah.
The Department of Defense statement said Voelke was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart.
Voelke was a 1988 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and had served 14 years in the Army. He was a native of Monroe, N.Y.
