City council moves meetings to 6:30 p.m.

The city of Suwanee has changed its monthly City Council meeting time from 7 to 6:30 p.m. The public hearing will be the first item on the agenda, and once that concludes the rest of the meeting will immediately follow.

Suwanee City Council will typically meet at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is Tuesday.

Suwanee’s Barron wins Southern Junior

Junior golfer Brett Barron, 14, of Suwanee won the 13- and 14-year-old division of the 40th annual Southern Junior Championship on June 15. Barron shot 72, 72 and 75 at the Country Club of North Carolina’s Dogwood Course, and won the three-day tournament by seven shots.

SPA to put on Little Mermaid Jr. production

Suwanee Perfoming Arts will put on a Broadway in the Park production of Little Mermaid Jr. on July 27 and 28. To open the event, Filligan’s Island, a take on the television series Gilligan’s Island, will begin at 7 p.m.

Broadway in the Park is free, but donations are encouraged for the annual fundraiser for the SPA.

Children are invited to an “Under the Sea” tea party and meet-and-greet with Ariel and friends at 10:30 a.m. July 27. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Call 770-821-7654 to purchase tickets.

Three Collins Hill students master German language

Three Collins Hill students earned Georgia’s highest scores on the 2012 National German Exam, a tool administered annually across the nation to assess the students’ acquisition of the German language. Jennifer Shaffer, a rising senior, earned Georgia’s top score on the Level 3 National German Exam. Taught by Collins Hill foreign language teacher Jennifer Haney, Shaffer has been enrolled in German for several years and most recently took honors German 3.

Garrett Helmick, a sophomore, earned second place on the Level 2 National German Exam. This past year he took German 2, taught by Collins Hill foreign language teacher Jill Tweety. Aaron Krask, a rising senior, earned a second place score on the Level 3 National German Exam. He was also in Haney’s honors German 3 class.

Collins Hill QB commits to FIU

Collins Hill quarterback Brett Sheehan committed on Wednesday to play at Florida International. Sheehan picked FIU over offers from Georgia State and South Alabama. Sheehan threw for 1,157 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, with three interceptions in seven games. Sheehan, a senior, has a 3.2 grade-point-average and plans to major in exercise science.

Two North students to study abroad in France

Two North Gwinnett sophomores recently won scholarships to study abroad. Theodore Chang and Kara Jones will visit France from July 2-13. The Consulat General de France in Atlanta presented Chang and Jones with the Green Connection Initiative all-expense paid 10-day trip to study the environment in La Rochelle, France. Two high school students from 10 regions from around the United States were selected for the French immersion program where they will study ecology. Chang and Jones earned the study abroad scholarship after they submitted a project proposal in which they each explained their personal environmental protection initiatives.

City to put on YouTube video competition

The city of Suwanee will put on a video competition for producers to describe the joys of living in Suwanee. More than one video may be selected, and up to $2,500 may be awarded through the competition with up to $1,000 being awarded for individual videos. The deadline is July 20. Original videos should be no longer than three minutes. Winning videos will be uploaded to the city’s YouTube channel and made available on suwanee.com. The preferred format for videos is .WMV or .MOV provided via DVD. City officials remind submitters to comply with copyright regulations.
