After struggling for the first month of the season, last year's International League All-Star Stefan Gartrell turned things around in May and now reaps the rewards.
The right-handed outfielder and designated hitter was named the Topps IL Player of the Month after hitting .333 with 10 home runs in 30 games. The San Francisco native's 10 homers led the IL and he was second in slugging (.676) and OPS (1.103) and RBIs (23). He was named the league's batter of the week when he hit at a .400 clip with three home runs and eight RBIs in five games.
Drafted out of San Francisco by the White Sox, Gartrell was traded to Gwinnett while with the Charlotte Knights last season after a Knights' trip to Coolray Field.
Gartrell, who last year set a G-Braves record for home runs in a season with 25 after joining the team, is hitting .242 on the season for Gwinnett with 11 home runs, 11 doubles and 31 RBIs. His homers rank second and doubles third for Gwinnett this season.
