DeKalb Schools OK budget with property tax hike

TUCKER (AP) -- DeKalb County's school board approved a budget that will lead to property owners paying more in school taxes next year.

The budget approved Thursday also means class sizes will increase. The budget also adds two furlough days for teachers and cuts the number of their aides.

The board cut $1.9 million -- about 40 percent -- from the Fernbank Science Center's $4.7 million budget. The cut to the science center was less than the $3.2 million Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson had recommended.

Overall, the district's budget was reduced by $77.5 million.
