MACON — A Bibb County judge is refusing to lower the bond for a Lilburn man charged in the killing and dismemberment of a law school graduate.

Judge Phil Brown ruled Tuesday that Stephen McDaniel must post the original bond amount of $850,000 to get out of jail before his trial.

McDaniel is charged with the June 2011 slaying and dismemberment of Mercer University law school graduate Lauren Giddings. He is fighting a murder charge.

Defense lawyers told the judge there's no way McDaniel's family can afford the current bond.

Prosecutors argued against a reduction and tried to get the judge to delay the hearing.

McDaniel was a law school classmate and neighbor of Giddings.
