Gwinnett leaders speak out on immigration announcement

LAWRENCEVILLE -- President Obama's announcement to grant amnesty to illegal immigrations who came the United States as children has brought mixed reaction from Gwinnett, a county that has a large immigrant population.

"Who wouldn't want to raise their family in the land of opportunity and under the rule of law?" Congressman Rob Woodall said Friday about the announcement. "Unfortunately, President Obama's decision to cease the deportation of potentially millions of illegal immigrants and instead grant them legal work permits -- while millions of legal U.S. residents remain unemployed and unable to find work -- undermines both the rule of law and the economic opportunity that is America."

Woodall, a Republican from Lawrenceville, said he would continue to work on immigration reform but does not believe the president has the power to change the policy by himself.

"With today's decree, President Obama demonstrates the same contempt for America's laws that those who enter illegally do," Woodall said. "He is undermining the balance of power laid out by the U.S. Constitution, going far beyond his power within the executive branch and advancing his election-year politics at the expense of the American economy and the American people's trust."

Woodall's colleague, Democrat Hank Johnson, who is Gwinnett's other congressman, said Congress should have enacted on comprehensive immigration reform legislation in the past.

"President Obama's important action is a small, but highly significant step toward a humane policy on immigration that recognizes the realities of today's world," Johnson said. "Undocumented children of illegal immigrants are not responsible for their parents' actions of bringing them to America. Although they are not born here, they truly are Americans. President Obama's policy finally recognizes that fact."

But Gwinnett resident Julianne Thompson, a leader in the Atlanta Tea Party, agreed with Woodall that the move is unconstitutional.

"This is nothing more than blanket amnesty disguised in such a way to fool people into believing it applies only to children," said said in a statement. "This will have far reaching consequences which will grant amnesty to potentially millions. Americans and those here legally are struggling to find work, and this is a direct insult to them. It is nothing more than a poorly thought-out political stunt in an election year."

So lets see if the Supreme Court has any relevance remaining.

Of course we could id the PARENTS of every work permit holder and get THEM out since they are admittedly illegal ...

Yeah! Let's break up even more Hispanic families! Let's terrorize their children even more! Let's threaten them with the loss of their parents if they dare to come out of the shadows! Let's keep tabs on them and hunt them down.

Verrrrry Christian sentiments. Your pastors must be very proud of you.

Very libertarian, as well. Interesting how you're quite content with government repression as long as it's directed at someone else.

Do you guys ever stop to listen to yourselves? You sound like "good Germans" rooting for the Nuremberg laws in the 1930s . . . or fugitive slave catchers in the south in the 1850s hunting down the "illegals" of that time . . . just good law-abiding citizens who won't tolerate anyone questioning the morality of these laws.

As for the policy being "political" -- give me a break! We just suffered through a series of GOP debates where the presidential hopefuls spent much of their time trying to top each other in pandering to our worst instincts on this issue. Immigrant-bashing is the socially acceptable form of racism -- the new political correctness. Just watch how enraged the bashers become when anyone dares to challenge their conventional wisdom on this topic.

Rep. Woodall's comments are typically clueless. You'd think that politicians who spout patriotic rhetoric would at least bother to read up on American history. Sadly, Rep. Woodall wouldn't know the Constitution if he tripped over it. But then, this is the same guy who believes that the housing and banking crises were caused by excessive government regulation. Don't let the facts get in the way of my ideology!

Maybe if Gwinnett civic leaders had devoted more energy to keeping an eye on the good old boys who run our County instead of scapegoating undocumented immigrants for all our woes, half our County commissioners wouldn't be facing criminal charges.

Hey who said this was aimed at ANY race? Its aimed square at ILLEGALS.

Nothing said Latino but YOU! ARE you a RACIST?

10

news2me 2 years, 1 month ago

Stuey - Most of these families arrived broken. They set out to cheat their way to in the US and brought their families here and have SAT idle for years waiting for amnesty. If the parents are deported, the children are more than welcome to return home with them. No one is stopping them, regardless of where they came from.

Why is it that you liberals are the ones so concerned about Christians and quoting the Bible, as I have not seen one anti-Illegal person using the Bible against an Illegal, that what our laws are for. If I have to listen to your pledge of love and compassion for people who break our laws, then you have to put up with the majority of US citizens that want them gone. Tolerance is not one sided.

How do YOU benefit from Illegal Aliens, Stuey? If you are so desperate to keep them here, YOU take care of them! Hypocrit, aren't you Stuey?

cathismith 2 years, 1 month ago

There are no such thing as "illegal" people. All the immigrants are people. They don't come here to sit. The adults come here to work at jobs which most people who are already here would never do. But, more to the point, President Obama provided temporary amnesty to their CHILDREN or young adults who came here as CHILDREN. They did nothing illegal. The executive order only covers those who have no criminal record, and who have either graduated from high school, been or are in good standing in the military, or who are currently in high school. And they must have been here for at least five years, starting at the latest, when they were CHILDREN. They did not come here to steal anyone's job.

4

IF you truely care, then you should take an Illegal Alien family into your home and pay for their every need. You would rather help lawbreakers and young adults who have been raised to lie, cheat and steal by their entitled parents than help your own next door neighbor in need. People like you have a twisted sense of compassion and only quote the Bible when it's convenient for you.

Anything that HRH Obama has done during his reign can AND will be undone. Those Illegals are going to need your undying support once Obama is out of office in a few months, so make sure you leave your door unlocked for these strangers that you support and love so much!

Isn't there something in the Bible about rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's? Are you equating government with God?

1

R 2 years, 1 month ago

Birth Certificate, US Constitution, National Debt, AAA Credit Rating, Stimulus Bill, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Eric Holder, Tim Geithner, Employment, Economy, Budget, Suing Arizona over Immigration, Ground Zero Mosque, Solyndra, BP Oil Spill, Energy Policy, Chicago Olympics, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Weakened Defense, Transparency, Czars and more Czars, Obamacare, Census, Acorn, Apology Tour, Bowing to World Leaders, Israel, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Education, General Motors, etc. LOL, the distinguished President has more failures on his resume than he does successes, and this is only the ones I can think of off the top of my head. President Barack Hussein Obama is an epic failure unlike any other president in the history of this nation. Feel free to add yours to the list too!

Do you really expect anyone to take you seriously with that drouly smiley face? You liberals throw "Racism" around ad naseum, leaving it virtually meaningless. Your hate words are guilting no one! I find it hypocritical how your ilk supports law breakers with such compassion and humanity, but your own neighbor you spew hatred and uninformed rants. How progressive of you!

You had 8 years to trash Bush, but we only get 4 to rail against your idol Obama. President Obama, the man you worship, has ruined this country. People like you that voted for him only have yourselves to blame for putting him in further position of ruining our country.

Again, this will all change very soon. President Obama's actions will be undone in a matter of months. It will take years to clean up his inaction and ineffectiveness. Be prepared to defend your Obama for much longer than you ever vomitted out Bush's name.

6

Say_that_again 2 years, 1 month ago

Weird: You expect it to take years to cleanup the "Obama mess" but believe Obama should have cleaned up Bush's mess overnight with the Republicans filibustering almost every legislation designed to help the economy. You've gotta laugh at such strange logic!

0

Bush's spending got us into this mess but Obama's spending will get us out. Yeah, you've gotta laugh at such strange logic!

0

Say_that_again 2 years, 1 month ago

Bush getting us into wars and following it with big tax cuts, which most Republicans have signed a pledge to keep, and an unfunded prescription drug plan that is designed to benefit drug companies more than senior citizens got us into the problem. Admittedly, Obama is not getting us out of the wars fast enough. But the idea that Obama is overspending in areas other than the wars is laughable. Stimulus spending has helped the economy and Republicans are blocking additional stimulus. What has been an total failure are the Bush Tax cuts which can not be shown to add jobs - The only proposal I have heard from Romney are more trax cuts that do nothing more than create more wealth for the wealthiest and add dept onto the middle class.

Weird: You have a selective memory, or senility regarding Bush's term and who controlled congress. Let's not forget it was Clinton before Bush that started the American Dream fiasco. Do you ever care what happened to our country on September 11, 2001 or have your forgotten about that, too?

You are so busy hating Bush and the Republicans, it is suprising that you have any heart left over for your Illegal Aliens. Your bitterness has caused memory loss, as the topic is on Illegal Aliens and Obama's continued epic failure as a President and pimping for votes.

Focus on the topic at hand, and stop living in the past. It is our current President that wants to destroy the future of this country and dismantle our laws. Why do you hate your country so much? Is this how a Progressive mind works?

1

JohnGalt 2 years, 1 month ago

Please point out precisely which part of my comment was "racist". I'll be waiting....and waiting...and waiting. I'm surprised "logic" is even in your vocabulary. It certainly is lacking in anything you have posted thus far.

4

Say_that_again 2 years, 1 month ago

Of course racist do not see their own racist attitudes and try to rationalize. Since you asked, I will give you two quick ones. You question Obama's birth certificate but do not question Romney's - note Romney only submitted a "certificate of live birth" and not the "long form" and Romney's Father was born in Mexico and had multiple mothers. How do we know Romney wasn't also? You want to condemn Obama for the ideas of people that he had casual or business association with but you do not condemn Republicans for their associates. George Bush is even shown holding hands with the Saudi Prince. The attempts to rationalize your prejudice only further proves it! It is not my intent to get into an argument, just pointing out the obvious and let you do your own self examination. If you cannot accept (or it makes you feel uncomfortable) your child dating or marrying someone of another race, you are a racist. Their are degrees of racism and I am not saying you fall into the category exemplified by the KKK.

1

NewsReader 2 years, 1 month ago

And that is your proof? That is RICH!

0

news2me 2 years, 1 month ago

"If you cannot accept (or it makes you feel uncomfortable) your child dating or marrying someone of another race, you are a racist."

You just called a large chunk of the Black population in America - Racist!

Again, stop with the Race card, as you are destroying your argument regarding ILLEGAL Aliens. I don't care if ILLEGAL Aliens are from Mexico or China, they deserve no special treatment for breaking our laws. Your definition and over use of RACISM is deeply flawed. But hey, the more you use the Race card to fit your hidden agenda, the more you damage your credibilty and actually hurt ILLEGAL immigrants.

1

kevin 2 years, 1 month ago

this remark isn't about race. Even if it was, so what. "Politically" correct is what is destroying free speech. I call a duck a duck. Besides, have you forgotten that Obama is 50% white, 47% black and 3% misc blood? Maybe he should be treated as a white.

In response to the questions about what taxes undocumented immigrants pay, the answer is that they pay a lot of taxes -- sales, income, social security, and, for the many immigrant homeowners, property taxes -- while receiving very little benefit in return.

In response to those saying that the laws are directed at undocumented immigrants, not Hispanics, tell that to my 75-year-old Hispanic friend, a military veteran who is a US citizen and has lived in this country his entire life, who was harassed by local police. Please explain to me how the laws can be enforced without racially profiling Hispanics. You know very well that blue eyed blonds, or good old boys, are not going to be hassled under these policies or pulled over at a random police checkpoint -- only brown skinned folks are. The police aren't going to stake out predominantly Anglo churches -- only Hispanic ones.

As for the claim that Hispanic families are broken, the reality is that they tend to be more intact than Anglo families, with far lower rates of divorce. National surveys show that Hispanics top motivation is making a better life for their children, while Anglos tend to place more emphasis on material gain. It's our broken immigration policies that are separating and destroying Hispanic families. We actually have a lot to learn from the Hispanic community in this regard -- we should be emulating their strong family values, rather than destroying them.

Finally, if your religion counsels you to unquestioningly obey government authority, regardless of whether the policies in question are right or wrong, whether they are destroying families and sowing hatred, it's a sad excuse for religion. Under that interpretation of religion, Christians would have had to just accept slavery and Jim Crow, which were the law of the land at the time. Ministers and religious activists would have had no business fighting for abolition and civil rights -- they would just have had to grin and bear unjust laws. That's not a religion that I recognize. It certainly isn't the religion of Martin Luther King, Gandhi . . . or Jesus Christ.

2

news2me 2 years, 1 month ago

"tell that to my 75-year-old Hispanic friend, a military veteran who is a US citizen and has lived in this country his entire life"

Stu, how many times are you going to bring up your only friend the Hispanic? Is that suppose to mean something like you have black friends so you can't be a racist?

Your voice and opinion are becoming the minority with very post of your love for lawbreakers and your hatred for your own country.

Pay a visit with your Hispanic friend to his native country and see how you are treated there. Maybe when you return from home you can apologize to your neighbor and feel remorse for your bitterness.

As if finding racism in another country excuses you for your own racism. Thanks for another laugh on the absurdity of the position to which you cling. If you would do some unbiased research instead of clinging such absurdities, you might find less that is "news2you". Your attitude toward those with whom you disagree, classifying them as hating this country only puts emphasis on your own irrational prejudices. I know you do not hate this country even though many of your ideas will seriously hurt this country if instigated, much like the Bush tax cuts have seriously harmed our economy.

0

NewsReader 2 years, 1 month ago

The RACE card! Don't leave home without it! I don't agree with news2you. I don't think you hate this country. I think that you love this country in much the same way a parasite loves its host. JCJB 2 years, 1 month ago

Get over yourself. Check the stats on how many of them are married, that's why the divorce rate is lower. We are not destroying them, they know they are here illegally. See what happens if you are illegal in other countries. I welcome anyone here if they come the right way. There are people waiting for years to come to the USA legally. It has nothing to do with anybody's religion. I, for one, am sick of signs in Spanish and I shouldn't have to press "1" for English. This is America and I'm tired of having to cater to everyone else. If I moved to a different country, I would certainly not expect them to conform to me. And I would learn their language.

3

Doesn't the language of English come from a FOREIGN country, like, ah, England? And how did it happen to become the official language of a country half-way across the world? And before that it was the Irish and the Germans who were my ancestors.

The difference: when the Polish, Jewish and Italians came over in the late 1800s/early 1900s, they came over by boat, thru a US Port and were documented when they disembarked. Many subsequently pursued citizenship, but regardless of that, all were granted legal entry. This is not the case when people "sneak" over the border and do not go thru official US ports where they can be documented.

0

Those immigrants that you grew up with came through Ellis Island and were all documented before setting foot on US soil. What about that fact?

What about your blind compassion for ILLEGAL immigrants, which is what they are compared to your example from your native Detroit?

Stop being a hypocrit, and be honest with the majority of Americans that oppose Illegal Aliens being able to cut in the LEGAL Immgration line. What do YOU stand to gain OR lose from ILLEGAL immigration?

Does Romney even need the Latino vote? Even of they all vote, there are not enough of them to decide an election alone by themselves. From the 2010 Census: The overwhelming majority (97 percent) of the total U.S. population reported only one race in 2010. This group totaled 299.7 million. Of these, the largest group reported white alone (223.6 million), accounting for 72 percent of all people living in the United States. The black or African-American population totaled 38.9 million and represented 13 percent of the total population. Hispanics comprised 16 percent of the total U.S. population of 308.7 million.

The thing is you can debate the 'poor' innocent children who were dragged here against their will. You can debate the adults who knowingly violated federal law the moment they walked across the border. You can debate whether conservatives are racist or Liberals ignorant. The bottom line is that the President of the United States thinks that he and he alone is so wise, so above legislative president that he can unilaterally change the Constitution by circumventing Congress. Whether you agree with the action or not EVERYONE should be appalled at the power grab.

3

kevin 2 years, 1 month ago

This government can't find their own kids much less where all those illegals are living. Besides, who is going to be able to verify their birth date, when they came here, and where they have been? Obama is just trying to give a free pass to them all, at the expense of the millions that came here legally. They are not too happy about this either. Obama is only "cheapen" our laws and our Constitution for votes, which in itself should turn off all American citizens. Come on Nov. Obama is running so scared that he is lying, cheating, and not enforcing any law he can find that will give him a vote. All those Americans who will vote for someone like this should be tried for "treason" and thrown out this country. These actions should be treated a "treason" since Obama took an oath on a Bible to uphold our laws. There is nothing you can say that will change this way of thinking. Obama has done nothing but destroyed us in 3.5 years. Maybe all you supporters can come out of the closet before the election so we can have you all counted!

0

jan3401 2 years, 1 month ago

Where it hurts most is in the families whose chief supporter has lost his/her job and is searching desperately for work to keep his/her family fed and clothed at this time of high unemployment? And now we have this ruling for illegal immigrants? What poor timing, indeed! For you young adults who are here illegally through no fault of your own, please take the steps now to become legal American citizens or you, too, will find yourselves facing this very same issue in the coming years - and you won't like it at all!

0

kevin 2 years, 1 month ago

Our officials should be arresting and/or following every single illegal that is showing up on TV so they could at least record where they are living. This way, when it comes time to deport, we can find the rats. They have to have balls to come here illegally and then expect Americans to welcome them and feed them and give them what an American citizen has already earned and fought for. Just let one of them try to assault me or my family. It will be the last time they set foot on U.S. soil but maybe under it.
