SPA to put on Little Mermaid, Jr. production
Suwanee Perfoming Arts will put on a Broadway in the Park production of Little Mermaid, Jr. on July 27 and 28. To open the event, Filligan’s Island, a take on the television series Gilligan’s Island, will begin at 7 p.m.
Broadway in the Park is free, but donations are encouraged for the annual fundraiser for the SPA.
Children are invited to an “Under the Sea” tea party and meet-and-greet with Ariel and friends at 10:30 a.m. July 27. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Call 770-821-7654 to purchase tickets.
Epiphany Lutheran plan mission trip
High school and college youth from Epiphany Lutheran Church will visit Jacmel, Haiti from June 30 to July 10 to put on a summer camp for 250 “ultra-poor” children. The camp is a joint venture between Epiphany and Abiding Hope Lutheran in Littleton, Colo. The camp and travel expenses are $30,000. Each Epiphany youth will give a personal hygiene kit, and each Haitian family will receive a water filtration device.
Former Lion earns spot in championship
Peachtree Ridge grad Seth Reeves, now a golfer at Georgia Tech, emerged from a playoff in qualifying Tuesday morning and earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships, which is held July 9-14 in Midway, Utah.
Reeves shot 69 and 70 Monday at Mystery Valley Golf Club to finish in a three-way tie for second in qualifying with Valdosta’s Sepp Straka, a golfer at Georgia, and Florida State golfer Kyle Cobb.
Those three went to a playoff for two spots Monday night and remained tied after the first playoff hole when play was stopped because of darkness.
Straka made birdie on the first playoff hole Tuesday morning to earn the first qualifying spot, leaving the other two to play for the final position. Both golfers birdied the next playoff hole, No. 18, and then Reeves clinched his spot with a birdie on the next hole, No. 17.
Three North students earn perfect scores
Three North Gwinnett High School students were among five Gwinnett County Public Schools students who earned a perfect score on the national Latin exam. Ho Lim Lee, the 2012 class valedictorian, scored a perfect paper on the level four poetry category. Josh O’Shields, a junior, earned a perfect score on a level three poetry piece, and Angela Park, a sophomore, earned a perfect score on the national exam.
City to put on YouTube video competition
The city of Suwanee will put on a video competition for producers to describe the joys of living in Suwanee. More than one video may be selected, and up to $2,500 may be awarded through the competition with up to $1,000 being awarded for individual videos. The deadline is July 20. Original videos should be no longer than three minutes. Winning videos will be uploaded to the city’s YouTube channel and made available on suwanee.com. The preferred format for videos is WMV or MOV provided via DVD. City officials remind submitters to comply with copyright regulations.
Lacrosse players selected as All-Americans
Peachtree Ridge’s Jacob Lee, both rising senior midfielders, were selected as Brine National All-Americans at the high school level. The Brine National All-Star Team for middle-school players featured four Gwinnett players, including Suwanee residents Trey Arnold (midfield) and Ben Stump (goalkeeper). The honors from Brine this week come with invitations to the Brine National All-Star Lacrosse Academy, the National Lacrosse Clinic and the Brine All-American Lacrosse National Classic.
North’s McDavid honored for softball season
North grad Alex McDavid had an impressive freshman softball season at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, earning both conference and regional honors. The third baseman/pitcher was a Division I All-Mideast Region selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, a second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference pick and an All-OVC Newcomer Team selection. She hit .368 with three home runs, 30 RBIs, 10 doubles and 60 hits, leading her team in all those categories. She also made seven appearances and had a 2.21 ERA as a pitcher.
North graduate picked as all-star
Former North standout Chris Hawkins, a third-round draft choice in 2010, was an Eastern Division pick for the Midwest League all-star game, scheduled for June 19 at Kane County outside Chicago. A shortstop at North, Hawkins played third base to start his pro career in the rookie Gulf Coast League, and moved to the outfield full time last year. He was rated as the Blue Jays’ No. 13 prospect by MLB.com, hit .318 in 68 games for Bluefield in the Appalachian League last year.
Workers needed for election
Poll workers are needed for the special City Council election on July 31. Voting will take place at city hall, while metro area voters will cast ballots for the Transportation Investment Act at voters’ regular Gwinnett County polling site. Public works welcomes new employee
Buford resident Denise Bommicino has joined the public works department as a part-time park attendant. Bommicino previously worked events and in parks for the city of Duluth.
Joint meeting planned between business groups
The Suwanee Business Alliance will have its June meeting alongside the Johns Creek Business Association. The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. June 19 at St. Marlo Country Club in Duluth. It will have food, a cash bar and door prizes that retail for more than $1,000 combined. The SBA typically meets on the second Wednesday of each month at a member’s business.
Singles group headed to Braves game
Shadowbrook Baptist Church’s “Single Adult Sunday School” group will attend the Atlanta Braves’ game against the Washington Nationals on June 29 at Turner Field. Tickets are $12 and the seats will be above the third baseline. The group will leave the church at 5:30 p.m. and stop at the Varsity on the way. Signup deadline is June 17.
Fallen soldiers golf tourney set for Bear’s Best
Fallen Heroes of Georgia, which honors the memory of soldiers who died serving the U.S., will host its first fundraiser golf tournament June 22 at Bear’s Best Golf Club in Suwanee.
All proceeds from the event go to charities created in honor of a fallen Georgia soldier. The cost is $125 per player and sponsorships also are available.
