Man arrested in arson at family apartment complex

NORCROSS -- Gwinnett County Fire Department investigators on Monday caught up with a Norcross man suspected of setting an apartment building full of sleeping families on fire in April, officials said.

And now, investigators believe suspect Julius Macklin, 21, may not have acted alone.

Macklin was arrested about midnight at an apartment complex near Norcross on charges of first-degree arson, ending a search that's stretched for several weeks, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Eric Eberly. He's being held at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

Just before 2 a.m. on April 28, Macklin allegedly tried to set fire to combustible materials in an apartment he used to live in at The Arbor Mills apartments on Graves Road. Macklin's arrest warrant indicates his girlfriend still lives at the unit.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire damage to the apartment's kitchen but no fire. No injuries were reported, though many families were sleeping in other units, officials said at the time.

Eberly said investigators are now seeking an additional person of interest in connection with the incident. That person was not identified.
