Gwinnett Daily Post
LAWRENCEVILLE -- Firefighters have long had a reputation for culinary cunning. Later this month, Gwinnett's finest will show off their skills in a heart healthy cooking competition.
Hosted by Gwinnett Medical Center, the "Fired up for Heart Health" cook-off will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 23 at the Georgia Gwinnett College student dining hall. Firefighters and other emergency personnel will prepare their favorite heart healthy meals while attendees visit informational booths and receive a complimentary blood pressure check.
A recent study showed that firefighters' risk of developing heart disease is 300 percent greater than that of the general population, GMC officials said.
Food will be judged by Justin Balmes, a finalist on season 7 of "The Next Food Network Star" and an instructor at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Recipes will also be available to those that attend.
The event is free to attend. To RSVP, visit www.gmc-rsvp.org.
Georgia Gwinnett College is located at 1000 University Lane in Lawrenceville. The dining hall is located in Building E.
