Easy victory for Gwinnett Majic in season opener

BUFORD — The Gastonia (N.C.) Gamers were no match for Brandon O'Brien and the Gwinnett Majic in the teams' World Basketball Association season opener this past weekend.

O'Brien, a Stone Mountain product who played at Clark-Atlanta, scored a game-high 30 points as the Majic defeated Gastonia 139-86 in a home game at Bogan Park's gym on Saturday. Javon Randolph had 20 points and 11 assists and Berkmar grad Wayne Arnold scored 22 for Gwinnett, which has won the past three WBA championships.

Two other Gwinnett products also stood out for the victors. Berkmar's Alex Weekes had nine points and 12 rebounds and Collins Hill's Antron Pippen added 11 points.

The game was tied at 11 early, but a 22-4 Majic run turned it into a blowout. Gwinnett topped the 100-point mark in the third quarter and coasted to its first win of the season under new head coach Steve Melnick.

The Majic's next game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Bogan Park against the Anderson (S.C.) Heat for the club's College Night, where college students will be admitted for $3. Other tickets are $6 and children under 6 can enter at no cost.
