One big inning kills G-Braves in loss

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — The Pawtucket Red Sox erased a 1-0 deficit with a six-run seventh inning, defeating the Gwinnett Braves 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in Game 2 of the four-game series at McCoy Stadium.

Ernesto Mejia homered in the second for the G-Braves, but starter Eric Junge surrendered six earned runs in his final inning of work as Gwinnett fell to 2-6 on the road trip.

The G-Braves struck first, but it would end up being their lone run. Mejia pounded the first pitch he saw in the second inning from PawSox starter Justin Germano to left center for a solo homer (11) to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. The homer plated Mejia’s team-leading 44th RBI of the season.

Gwinnett would get only two more hits the rest of the game off of Germano.

Junge pitched a fine game until it all unraveled in the seventh. In that inning, Lars Anderson led off with a single to center and moved to third on a double down the left field line by former G-Brave Mauro Gomez. The Braves intentionally walked Josh Kroeger and pitched to Alex Hassan with the bases loaded and no one out. Junge walked Hassan to force in Anderson from third and tie the game, 1-1.

Nate Spears then hit a bloop single down the left field line scoring Gomez. A throwing error on the play by Stefan Gartrell allowed Kroeger to score, putting the PawSox up 3-1. Jon Hee followed with a triple to right, scoring both Hassan and Spears to move the lead to 5-1. Hee would eventually score on a ground out to second by Ryan Kalish.

Junge (3-6) worked 6.2 innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out a season-high six. Jaye Chapman went 1.1 innings in relief, surrendering two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Germano (7-3) pitched his first complete game of the season; giving up three hits and one run in nine innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Mejia’s second inning homer was the only extra base hit on the day for the G-Braves. The other Gwinnett hits were singles by Tyler Pastornicky and Felix Pie.

For Pawtucket, Gomez, Spears and Hee each had two hits with Hee coming up with two RBIs.

Gwinnett (34-30) and Pawtucket (40-24) will play again at McCoy Stadium on Monday night. Left-hander Yohan Flande (2-4, 3.92 ERA) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves. The PawSox have scheduled right-hander Daniel Bard (0-0, 27.00 ERA). First pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
