LILBURN -- After enduring auditions in May, 58 contestants are preparing to perform for the title of Gwinnett's next Lilburn Idol.
Today marks the first round of competitions to eliminate singers and allow the others move on to the Ninth Annual Lilburn Idol finale in July.
This year, the competition will feature an increase in audience vote weight from 20 percent to 40 percent with judges' feedback counting for 60 percent. The audience is asked to bring quarters to vote for their favorite performers to advance them to the next level and possibly take the crown.
Contestants ranging in age from 5 to 71 vie for first place in their respective age group. Last year, winners walked away with gift certificates to the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville. This year, singers will win recording time at Virtual Adrenaline Recording Studio, plus other prizes and small gifts from local businesses.
"All performances are held in our beautiful Lilburn City Park and families can come early to enjoy the playground and shady walking trails," vent coordinator Leslie Edwin said. "We encourage everyone to bring blankets to lay out on the grass or folding chairs to enjoy the show."
Besides the chairs, guests are asked to bring their own hand-packed picnics and dinners to the event. Don't want to make a meal? Tonight, Spiced Right will have food for sale, serving its classic Georgia barbecue.
The three initial competitions are held today, June 15, and June 29, before the finale on July 20. All competitions will be at 7 p.m.
