Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke, a Collins Hill grad, was named the 2011-12 Virginia Rookie of the Year in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. The award goes to the top newcomer among Virginia's football-playing colleges.
Heinicke, who took over as a true freshman starter in Game 5, completed 211 of 307 passes for 25 touchdowns and just one interception, a Hail Mary at the end of a half, last season. He was runner-up for The Sports Network's Jerry Rice Award and was the College Football Performance Awards FCS National Performer of the Year.
In FCS playoff games, he set school records with five touchdown passes against both Georgia Southern and Norfolk State. He averaged 307.5 passing yards in the postseason.
