Gwinnett high-school stars Diamond DeShields of Norcross and Kaela Davis of Buford were the top two scorers Thursday as the USA Basketball Under-17 National Team won its first exhibition 80-38 over Brazil. The game, played in Orlando, wrapped up a week of training.
DeShields had a team-high 15 points along with four steals and three assists and Davis added 11 points.
"I think we did wonderful today, fantastic actually when you consider we have only been together for a week and we've only practiced five times," DeShields said. "Coming out and playing against this Brazil team that has been together for months, I think we came together very well as a unit. We did a lot of things collectively that led up to the win."
The players returned to their home states Friday, but will reconvene for training camp Aug. 1-7 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. They will depart after that camp for the Aug. 17-26 Under-17 FIBA World Championships in the Netherlands.
