LAWRENCEVILLE — Though no official word has come down from the Atlanta Braves, pitcher Sean Gilmartin joined the Gwinnett Braves on Thursday.
The former first-round pick out of Florida State will, if activated, fill the roster spot of Eric Junge who the Braves released Thursday.
Gilmartin has played the entirety of this season with Class AA Mississippi. The is 5-8 with a 3.54 ERA in 20 starts. He threw three complete games with the M-Braves and struck out 86 batters to his 26 walks. His 119 1/3 innings rank second in Mississippi, as does his strikeout total.
If activated, Gilmartin would be available to pitch Sunday for the G-Braves at Charlotte. Junge's turn is Saturday. Julio Teheran is scheduled to start Sunday for Gwinnett.
A California native, Gilmartin was named to the Southern League All-Star team this season in his first full professional season.
Junge leaves the G-Braves with a 6-8 record and a 4.66 ERA. He did win two of his past three starts, allowing six runs over 15 innings in the three games.
