Peachtree Ridge assistant principal honored by state

Peachtree Ridge administrator honoredPeachtree Ridge High assistant principal Paul Johnson was recently honored as the Georgia Counseling Advocate of the Year. Earlier this year, Johnson earned similar awards at the school system and region levels.

At Peachtree Ridge, Johnson is in charge of district, state and national testing, and is the administrator who oversees the departments of counseling and foreign language.The Georgia School Counselors Association will officially present Johnson with this award during the Georgia School Counselor Association state conference in Athens, Nov. 7-9.Gaga for Tatas fundraiserTilted Kilt in Suwanee will host a fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Thursday for the team, Gaga for Tatas, that participates in the annual Susan G. Komen 3-day event to raise money and awareness to fight breast cancer.

"The owners there are highly interested in community involvement, specifically Susan G. Komen and the people who do the 3-day walk," said Julie Perdue, a Suwanee resident and member of the team.

The Komen event is in October in Atlanta when participants walk 60 miles in three days. Perdue said the fundraiser will have drink specials and raffle prizes.Old Peachtree 5K schedulued for Aug. 25The GA-PCOM Old Peachtree Road 5K for Rainbow Village will be Aug. 25 at 625 Old Peachtree Rd. in Suwanee. Pre-registered packet pickup and race-day registration will begin at 8 a.m. A t-shirt is included with registration, and there are prizes for category winners. Proceeds from the event go to Duluth-based Rainbow Village, which is transitional housing community for homeless families with children. Its goal is to break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence.Smithereens to perform at Suwanee DayThe headline band at Suwanee Day on Sept. 15 will be New Jersey-based Smithereens. The band was formed in the early 1980s and has a classic rock feel. This is the 28th year the city has put on the event, which features arts and crafts exhibitors, children's activities, a parade, food vendors and free entertainment. About 40,000 people are expected to attend.Vertical Horizon takes stage at Town CenterAn Aug. 11 concert at Town Center Park will be headlined by the band Vertical Horizon. The concert will start at 6 p.m., and Vertical Horizon is expected to play at about 8 p.m. The alternative rock band, which was formed at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 1991, is known for hits like "Everything You Want," "Best I Ever Had" and "You're a God" that were all released in 1999. The band's newest album, "Burning the Days" is to be released in September.Blimpie Fit Fest 5K and 10K to be held Aug. 18The sixth annual Skylar's Run 5K and 10K Peachtree Qualifier will be one of the events at this years BLIMPIE Fit Fest on Aug. 18 at Town Center. Runners can also take the Blimpie Challenge and run both the 5K and 10K. There will also be a fun run and a special needs buddy run.

The BLIMPIE Fit Fest will also feature the BLIMPIE Fit Fest Expo, the Title IX Crossfit Challenge and the Bodyplex Zumba for special-needs kids.-- From Staff Reports
