The Barrow County CERT team is seeking recruits for its next class, which begins Aug. 16.
WINDER -- The Barrow County Community Response Team, commonly known as CERT, is looking for a few good citizens to join its ranks.
The next CERT class begins Aug. 16 and aims to teach regular citizens the basics in disaster preparedness.
Classes, which are free, will be held at Barrow County Emergency Services Station 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. each Thursday until Oct. 4.
"If at least one family member in every household would take this class, it would make a difference in the safety of the community," said Mike Wilson, CERT President.
Classes educate citizens in preparedness for hazards thatmay impact their area. Training includes basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Classes are also designed so that those who take the course can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when first responders are not immediately available, said Lt. Scott Dakin, Barrow County Emergency Services spokesman.
Those who choose to join CERT after taking the initial classes will continue to train monthly to stay sharp, officials said.
The team also participates in many county and community events, such as Public Safety Day, town festivals, Health Care Days, Veteran's Appreciation Day, Precinct Parking and the Christmas Holiday Connection and Toy Drive, Dakin said.
