Lawrenceville man charged in sex attacks near Chicago

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Police in a suburban Chicago city say a traveling salesman from Lawrenceville assaulted two girls and fondled a woman in a hotel swimming pool.

Charles Smith, 55, was charged with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault, said Sgt. Andy Johnston of the Elk Grove Village, Ill. police department. Johnston said the victims were girls, ages 10 and 11, who were at the pool inside the Ramada O'Hare hotel, northwest of Chicago. Smith was also accused of fondling a woman, 22, in the pool, Johnston said.

Smith was in the area on business, Johnston said.

The hotel is near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Smith appeared in court in Rolling Meadows, Ill. on Wednesday, where his bond was set at $200,000. Officials from the Cook County State's Attorney's office said Smith molested the girls, one of whom was attending a birthday party, after he told them he was a lifeguard and offered swim lessons, the Tribune reported.

Johnston said the incidents are still under investigation.

Smith's next court appearance is Aug. 10.
