NORCROSS -- Gwinnett County is known as the No. 1 American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in the world. This weekend, the cancer fighting organization is adding a feeder event to its resume: Bark for Life, honoring the care-giving qualities of canine companions and cancer survivors, both human and canine.
"It's the canine version of the Gwinnett Relay For Life featuring an opening ceremony, the walk, games, entertainment and fundraising opportunities -- compressed into a fun-filled Saturday morning," ACS Community Manager Kelly Smith said.
IF YOU GO
What: Bark for Life
When: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday
Where: Pinckneyville Park, 4758 South Old Peachtree Road, Norcross
Cost: Free admission
For more information: Visit www.gwinnettbarkforlife.org
The event is a "non-competitive fundraising dog walk" which benefits the Gwinnett Relay for Life.
"It provides funds for cancer research and ACS programs and services," Smith said.
Even if you don't have a pup, you can come to the event because Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation is having a "Dog Day at the Park" for the two-legged attendees with inflatables, food, ice cream and other activities.
Dogs and their owners come together as dog/owner pairs, individuals or teams to fundraise, complete a one-mile walk and raise cancer awareness.
The day begins at 9:15 a.m. with the one-mile walk. At 10 a.m., vendors, inflatables, concessions and face painting will be scattered around the park. The inaugural Bark for Life Fashion Show gets started at 10:30 a.m., followed by dog games like "best trick," "clean your plate" and "bobbing for weenies" at 11 a.m.
Registration for the competition is $20 in advance and $25 on Saturday.
