Snellville police chief in hospital

SNELLVILLE -- Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead, who also serves as interim city manager, is recovering from complications related to a recent surgery.

Whitehead was admitted to Eastside Medical Center over the weekend for "something that's not too serious," Snellville Police Capt. Greg Perry confirmed Monday. Rumors about him having a heart attack were false, Perry said.

Whitehead responded to an email himself Monday, something Perry said the chief has been doing regularly while in the hospital.

"I am recuperating from complications from recent surgery," wrote Whitehead, who had surgery on his foot several weeks ago. "I am getting better."

Perry said Whitehead remained in the hospital Monday and would likely miss a week or so of work.

"I visited with him (Saturday) morning and he was in great spirits and looked well," Snellville Mayor Kelly Kautz said.

Whitehead has been filling a secondary role as Snellville's interim city manager for several months, as the city looks for a permanent replacement to fill the seat vacated by Russell Treadway's resignation. Kautz said Monday that a decision could be made this week.
