LAWRENCEVILLE -- As weather permits, there will be lane closures on Ga. Highway 316 starting today.
Lane closures are scheduled for tonight and Monday for the project that will upgrade Ga. 316's intersections at Ga. Highway 20 and Collins Hill Road into an interstate-style interchange.
The outside lane of Ga. 316 will be closed in each direction today and Monday as crews set temporary barrier wall, a press release said.
In addition, a single lane closure will be in place on Collins Hill Road from Ga. 316 to Indian Branch Road overnights Monday through Thursday.
The work is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to avoid rush hour, but transportation officials are still expecting delays and have asked people to avoid the work zone if they can.
"This project will build one interchange or exit to allow traffic from 316 to access 20 or to access Collins Hill Road using a system of long ramps," Bayne Smith, a district engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation, said in the release. "The existing signalized intersections at State Route 20 and at Collins Hill Road will be removed as the interchange is finished. It is similar to the system we have along I-85 from SR 120 down to Pleasant Hill Road. You get off the mainline of I-85 south at SR 120 and use the parallel roads to access the exit you need."
The $37.4 million construction project includes 2.23 miles of new roadway and two new bridges over Ga. 316. Contractor GP's Enterprises of Auburn plans to have the project complete by the end of 2014.
