NORCROSS -- To some people, canines are man's best friend and then some.

An upcoming event aims to recognize the role that dogs play in the lives of cancer patients in serving as caregivers.

The inaugural Bark for Life of Gwinnett is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 21 at Pinckneyville Park. Those looking to bring their canines for a walk, demonstrations and contests should show up at 8 a.m. to register.

According to its website, Bark for Life is a non-competitive fundraising dog walk event that honors the care-giving qualities of canine companions and cancer survivors, both human and canine. It's the four-legged version of the Gwinnett Relay For Life featuring an opening ceremony, the walk, games, entertainment and other fundraising opportunities.

Dogs and their families come together as dog/owner pairs, or individuals, or to form a team to fundraise, complete a one mile walk, raise cancer awareness.

It begins at 9:15 a.m. with a one-mile walk. At 10 a.m., there will be vendors, inflatables, concessions and face painting. The inaugural Bark for Life Fashion Show gets started at 10:30 a.m., followed by dog games like "best trick," "clean your plate" and "bobbing for weenies" at 11 a.m.

Registration is $20, and day-of registration is $25.
