ROSWELL -- Michael Garretson of Acworth, 19, fired a second-round, 4-under-par 68 to take the clubhouse lead partially through a weather-plagued second round of the Georgia Amateur Championship, taking place at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek.
At 6-under-par 138, Garretson holds a one-stroke lead over 2010 champion and first-round co-leader Lee Knox of Augusta.
Play was called for the day following two weather delays. The round was initially suspended for one hour and eight minutes, from 3:48 to 4:56, due to an approaching thunderstorm. Play resumed for just 10 minutes, but golfers were called off the course again at 5:06, when storms again threatened the area. After heavy rains, lightning and thunder for more than an hour, play was called due to wet conditions on the golf course.
The second round will resume at 7:30 a.m. today.
After the round, the field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties and anyone within 10 strokes of the leader. The third round will begin approximately at noon.
Garretson, a graduate of Harrison High School and rising sophomore on the University of South Alabama golf team, carded five birdies during his round on Friday. He birdied all four par-5s (holes 1, 4, 10 and 16) and tacked on another at the 419-yard ninth (his final hole of the day). The lone blemish on his scorecard was a bogey at the par-3 fifth (209 yards).
