Altered States Blu-ray (R)
Movie: 3 ans 1/2 stars
Disc: 3 stars
Marking the big screen debut of both William Hurt and Drew Barrymore, manic director Ken Russell's final-cut version was so radically different from the novel and subsequent screenplay by Paddy Chayevfsky, the writer insisted that his pseudonym be used in the credits. Make no mistake, this is an "acquired taste" movie and some people will absolutely hate it. A cult film if there ever was one, "Altered States" is a hyper-stylized, drug-fueled sci-fi thriller that makes little sense but is addictive in a guilty pleasure sort of way. The new Blu-ray transfer is superb and makes up for the many disappointing past DVD releases and the lone, chintzy "special feature."
Technical specs: aspect ratio: Widescreen (1080p/1.78:1), audio: English (DTS-HD MA 5.1), Spanish (Dolby Digital 2.0), subtitles: English, French and Spanish.
