Workshop to teach water conservation, save money

LAWRENCEVILLE -- With water nearly as scarce as money these days, Gwinnett residents have been taking advantage of a water conservation class, aimed at saving both.

The latest of the county workshops is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

"They are extremely popular because of continued reduced rainfall in our region, issues surrounding water availability from sources like Lake Lanier, and of course current economic conditions spurring a desire to save money every way possible," said Heather Moody, the water conservation coordinator for the county Department of Water Resources.

During the class, Moody plans to make sure customers can adequately read their county water bill, which has a three tier system to give the lowest price to people who use the least amount of water.

Homeowners can learn how to find out if pipes or fixtures are leaking, since a dripping faucet alone can waste nearly 500 gallons of water a month. And tips cover everything from how to make sure a new appliance is water efficient to how to plan landscaping with conservation in mind.

As part of the free program, attendees will receive a low-flow retrofit kit, outdoor water efficiency kit, do-it-yourself water audit guide and information on how to apply for the county's toilet rebate program.

The kits -- plus replacing an old, inefficient toilet -- could save a family of four more than $750 on water bills each year, Moody said.

Attendees may register by sending an email with their name, address and phone number to dwrconserve@gwinnettcounty.com or calling 678.376.6722.

I see the Feds can't run anything. Look at Social Security, our border security, now even our armed forces. Now we can also add water to the list. Why do the people who first lived here have to also conserve on water? We didn't ask for all this development. Think about this for a moment. To benefit government mostly, with more money, they keep adding new development. Each new person or facility uses water that would have gone to me and you.Eventually we run out. Why? Too much development continues to cause us great harm. Slow it down or move it on somewhere else. I am paying for my water. What difference should it make if I use what I need to use? Our State and County government can't even solve a simple water problem, how can they balance a budget?
