South grad Williams to join Hawks

Former South Gwinnett star Lou Williams has agreed to a contract to join the Atlanta Hawks, according to ESPN.com.

“Happy to be apart of a team that’s similar to the Sixers ... Young, athletic and hardworking,” Williams said on Twitter.

The 6-foot-2 guard, coming off the best season of his seven-year NBA career, reportedly agreed to a multiyear contract as a free agent with the Hawks.

Williams, 25, said last week that he would opt out of the final year of his contract with the 76ers, which was reportedly worth $6.4 million. He was Philadelphia’s leading scorer this past season, averaging 14.9 points as the team’s sixth man.

Williams led South to the Class AAAAA state championship as a junior and won the Naismith Award as a senior. He originally committed to the University of Georgia basketball team, but opted for the NBA Draft where he was selected 45th overall.
