Fuel leak mitigated in Stone Mountain

STONE MOUNTAIN -- Emergency crews were able to redirect about 70 gallons of diesel fuel discharged during a car crash Thursday morning, preventing it from entering nearby storm drains.

Gwinnett County fire crews were called to the accident scene near the Stone Mountain intersection of Bermuda Road and West Park Place at about 9 a.m. Thursday. A passenger vehicle collided with a box truck, rupturing the truck's fuel tank, fire department spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden said.

About 70 of the tank's 100 gallons of diesel fuel were discharged. The hazardous materials team was dispatched and quickly able to mitigate the leak and redirect the fuel away from storm drains.

Environmental agencies were notified and the trucking company had their clean-up company respond, Rhoden said.

The driver of the passenger car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
